At the invitation of senior researcher Xu Jianping, professor You Yuzhu from the institute of marine science of Sydney University in Australia, visited the Second Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration, and made an academic seminar. He also introduced the implementation of Australia Argo plan to the group of China Argo Real-Time Data Center.

At the invitation of senior researcher Xu Jianping, Professor Chen Changsheng from College of Oceanography in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in U.S.A, visited the Second Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration, and made an academic seminar. He discussed with the scientific researchers of the Chinese Argo real-time data center on some scientific issues. He also appreciated that our country joined the international ocean observation plan in time, and gave precious suggestions for the data center’s construction.

The 2nd National Oceanic Data Assimilation Symposium (ODAS04) was held in Changshu City, Jiangsu Province. Over 40 representatives from 14 research organizations and universities attended the meeting. This symposium was sponsored by the Key Lab of Oceanic Dynamic Processes and Satellite Oceanography (SOA), the Second Institute of Oceanography (SOA), the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (CAS), and the Climate and Environment Committee of Chinese Industrial and Applied Mathematics Association.

• October 2004

Chinese 21st Antarctic Scientific Exploration Team set out from Shanghai Harbor. On 8-9 Nov., 5 Argo floats were launched into the Indian Ocean from the R/V “Xue Long” passing this area. In this cruise, there were 2 COPEX experiment Argo floats deployed in the area 115. 504ºE , 10.921ºS, which are developed by the Chinese National Ocean Technology Center.

• September 29-October 1, 2004

"5th Argo Data Management Meeting” was held in Southampton, British. Engineer Liu Zenghong of the Second Institute Of Oceanography (SOA) attend the meeting. There were 36 scientists from 9 countries (Australia, Canada, China, France, USA, British, Japan, Korea, and India).

September 5-9 2004

Three Western Pacific Asian countries (China, Korea and Japan) held “ International Workshop on the application of Argo Data” in Cheju Korea. Invited by KOA, Prof. Xu Jianping and Mr. Tong Mingrong of the Second Institute of Oceanography (SOA) attended the meeting, and they delivered their respective reports “China Argo project and its development” and “Discussion on Improving the Argo Data Real-time/Delayed-mode Quality Control System”. There were 25 scientists in the meeting from three countries. It was decided that the “Second International Workshop on the application of Argo Data” would be held Sep.-Oct. 2005 in Seoul of Korea.

• June 18–22, 2004

AOML/NOAA Delegation of Dr. Silvia L. Garzoli, Dr. David B. Enfield, Dr. Robert L. Molinari, and Dr. Cunzai Wang, visited SIO and China Argo Real-Time Data Center, and delivered the lectures following: 1.The Western Hemisphere Warm Pool; 2. NOAA Global Ocean Observing System for Climate; Real-time Quality Control and Data Tracking at NOAA/AOML's Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) Center; and An Overview of Understanding ENSO Physics.

• March 26 -April 3, 2004

Invited by Prof. Xu Jianping and Liang Chujing, Dr. Grace C. Chang from University of California, Santa Barbara, visited China Argo Real-Time Data Center, gave lectures, and discussed the issues of Argo Data processing.

• March 3-11, 2004

Prof. Xu Jianping attended the IAST-6 (Word version) meeting held in IFREMER, Brest, France, and after the meeting, he visited Portugal Educational and Research Institutions, under the invitation from Prof. Mario Ruivo, the Chairman of Portugal Cooperation Committee.

• January 2004

Three floats were deployed in the Northwestern Pacific, located in the area of 23º59.55 ' N, 136º59.97 ' E; 27º00.53 ' N, 136º59.83 ' E; 22º30.10 ' N, 134º30.70 ' E. As of that date, China has deployed 22 floats in the Northwestern Pacific. In addition, there is another one float ready to be deployed in the Western pacific and two floats in the Eastern Indian Ocean.
