SOA Youth Science Fund supported the research project “Argo data assimilation key technology”, which was conducted by Prof. Xu Dongfeng of the Second Institute of Oceanography.

There were 13 Argo floats deployed in the Northwestern Pacific, located in the square area of 21º15 ' N-6 ºN ,125º45 ' E-132º30 ' E, conducted by the R/V XiangYangHong 14.

China Argo implement workshop was held in Hangzhou, and there were over 50 officials and scientists attended the meeting from MOST, SOA and research and application organization.

China Argo group distributed to the public users the Global Argo profiling data from Jan.2001 to September 2002 of 500 floats in the global oceans (including Pacific, Atlantic and Indian ocean) deployed by the member countries. This work got the help from Prof. H. Freeland, Institute of Ocean Sciences of Canada.

In Beijing, in the annual meeting of the Research on the Climatic Disaster Formation Mechanism and Predicting theory, the Argo group distributed Argo profiling data from January 2001 to September 2002 from the floats in the Pacific deployed by the member countries.

A PROVOR float was deployed in the area of Northwestern Pacific ocean (15º0 ' N, 136º56 ' E). This was the first set (3) floats of China Argo project to be deployed in the Western Pacific, The 2 young researchers of SIO, Mr. Liu Zenghong and Mr. Sun Chaohui undertook the task of launching the floats.

Another APEX float was deployed in the area of Northwestern Pacific ocean (18º30 ' N, 129º30 ' E).

China Argo Group deployed one APEX float in the area of Northwestern Pacific ocean (22º01 ' N, 129º27 ' E).

Prof. Xu Jianping, Mr Zhu Yongling of SIO, Prof. Song Xuejia of NMEFC, Prof. Guo Fengyi and Dr. Ji Fengying of MDC attended the 3th Argo Data Management Meeting held in Ottawa, Canada.

China Argo Group imported 2 PROVOR floats from Canadian Metocean Company.

The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) ratified 2 research projects on Global Climate Changes and Regional Response related with Argo Program. One Project is Pacific-Indian Ocean Warm Pool Dynamics and Air-sea interaction applied by Prof. Chao Jiping from FIO, and the second is the Argo float data assimilation technology and its application in the short- term climate Prediction applied by Prof. Zhang Renhe from CAMS.

China Argo Coordinating Group was founded, and held its first meeting in Beijing. In June, 2002, the IOT produced the first sample machine of self-contained Cycle Profiling Float. It was deployed in sea water and in situ observing test was made.

China Argo Experiment Group (SIO) received the first 2 sets of float imported from Webb Research Company, U.S. The Group soon finished the specifications test and waited the cruise opportunity to deploy the floats.

Prof. Yu Weidong of FIO deployed one PROVOR float in the Eastern Indian Ocean (114º42 ' E, 14º12 ' S), during the cruise for the Research Project of Indian-Pacific Ocean Warm Pool and Circulation System.

Prof. Xu Jianping (IAST member) and Zhu Wenxi (Nation's Observer) from SOA, participated in the IAST-4 held in Hobart, Australia (Word version). At this meeting it was agreed the IAST-5 meeting would be held in March 2003 in Hangzhou,China.

China announced to join the Global Argo Program; and launched the Project of a New Generation of Real-Time Ocean Observing System –Experiment of Ocean Observing Array (China Argo), which is headed by Prof Xu Jianping from SIO, with the members from the institutions of FIO, TIO, NMDIS, NMEFC, IOT, CAMC, and SCSIOCA.

Under the sponsorship of the Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO), SIO sent 2 young researchers, Mr. Liu Zenghong and Mr. Guo Ming, to study the Argo related technology of float testing, deploying, and data receiving and processing, at University of Washington and AOML, US.
