•December 19, 2007

A state major basic research project (973 project) titled "Study of the upper ocean structure and its variation and prediction based on the global ocean Real-time observation array(Argo)" (Argo 973) approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) formally started in Hangzhou with the First Science Workshop of Argo 973. Responsible officials from MOST and SOA and experts including Academician Su Jilan, member of the expert group of the 973 Program, and Academicians Cao Jiping, Yuan Yeli and Hu Dunxin, Prof. Zhou Ning, Director of the Project Division, the General Office of China Ocean Mineral Resources Association, Profs. Chen Dake and Xu Jianping, members of the expert group of the project participated in the workshop. The project was divided into five subject groups. A number of Argo floats is going to be deployed and two cruises of investigation will be carried out in 2008. Prof. Chen Dake is the chief scientist of the project.

•November 13-16, 2007

On behalf of the China Argo Real-time Data Center, Mr. Liu Zenghong, Assistant Research Fellow of the Second Institute of Oceanography, SOA attended the 8th Argo Data Management Meeting hosted by CMAR, CSIRO, Australia in November 13-16, 2007. Mr. Xiang Wenxi, Deputy Director-General and Dr. Ji Fengyin of the National Marine Information Center of China also attended the meeting.

•November 12, 2007

China New Generation Ocean Observation Array (Argo)-Ocean Observing Network Experiment, a special pioneering project for the state major basic research program won the second prize of ocean innovative achievement of 2007 issued by SOA.. The project was fulfilled jointly by the Second institute of Oceanography, SOA, China Institute of Meteorological Sciences, the National Marine Information Center, the National Marine Environmental Forecast Center, the First Institute of Oceanography, SOA and the National Marine Technology Center with the Second Institute of Oceanography, SOA as the head.

•November 8, 2007

According to the instruction of the Department of International cooperation, SOA and the China Argo Planning Office, a poster name "Argo needs your cherisher" with 2008 calendar was designed by China Argo Real-time Data Center and 50,000 copies were printed and distributed to the marine and fishery agencies of the coastal provinces free of charge with an aim to generate awareness of the global Argo observation array as well as the Argo floats among the Chinese fishermen and others engaged in maritime activities so as to recover beached floats or floats caught by fishermen by chance in time.

•November 1, 2007

China Argo Real-time Data Center sent an email message to AIC to celebrate the establishment of global ocean observing array of 3000 floats of the International Argo Program started in 1998. Congratulation messages were also published in CHINA OCEAN NEWS and SCIENCE TIMES.

•October 29, 2007

A research project of the China Argo titled "Study on the Observation and Application of Argo Profiling Floats in the Southwestern Pacific Ocean” by SOA within the special fund for scientific research projects for public good. The project will be undertaken jointly by the Second Institute of Oceanography, SOA, the National Marine Environmental Forecast Center and the South China Sea Forecast Center of SOA with the Second Institute of Oceanography in the lead.

•October 15, 2007

Experts and students participated in the Second High-Level Training Course of "Dragon Program" sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, People's Republic of China and the European Space Agency visited China Argo Real-time Data Center. Engineer Zhu Bokang and Assistant Researcher Liu Zenghong briefed them on present situation and development trend of the construction of the global Argo observation network. They gave the guests Argo materials.

•September 12, 2007

Accompanied by Mr. Zhang Haisheng, Director-General of the Second Institute of Oceanography and Prof. Zheng Lianfu, Deputy Director-General of the Institute, Mr. Sun Zhihui, Administrator of SOA inspected China Argo Real-time Data Center and asked in detail about the progress of the implementation of China Argo program. During his visit he made instruction for the center that as an important member of the International Argo, we should try our best to make greater contributions for the successful implementation of the program.

•August 25, 2007

Accompanied by Prof. Li Jiabiao, Deputy Director-General of the Second Institute of Oceanography and Prof. Zhang Qing, Deputy Director of SOED, Mr. Shen Jianlei, Director of the Department of Basic Research, Ministry of Science and Technology and Dr. Zhou Jiangang visited China Argo Real-time Data Center and asked in detail about the progress of the implementation of China Argo program.

•July 28, 2007

Accompanied by Mr. Zhang Haisheng, Director General of the Second Institute of Oceanography, the State Oceanic Administration (SOA), Mr. Wang Fei, Vice Administrator of SOA inspected the China Argo Real-time Data Center. Prof. Chen Dake, Director of the State Key Lab of Satellite Ocean Environmental Dynamics (SOED) briefed him about the International Argo program and China Argo to him.

•March 19 – 20, 2007

At the invitation of Prof. Xu Jianping, Prof. Chen Changsheng from the College of Marine Science and Technology, University of Massachusetts, US visited the State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics and China Argo Real-time Data Center in March 19 – 20, 2007. He gave lectures and had discussion on possible cooperation with the scientists of the center.

•March 8, 2007

The Second General Session of the Chinese Committee of IOC/ENESCO was held in Beijing on March 8, 2007.  The meeting was chaired by Mr. Chen Lianzeng, Chairman of the Committee and Vice-Administrator of SOA.  More than 30 representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MOST, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education, SOA etc. participated in the meeting.  Presentations on the current situation of IOC’s Science plan, progress of global earth observation system and the recent development of global observation system were made.  Assistant Researcher of the China Argo Real-time Data Center, Mr. Liu Zenghong attended the meeting and gave a lecture in the title of Global Argo Ocean Real-Time Observation and the China Argo Program.

•March 7 – 9, 2007

At the invitation of Dr. P. A. Bernal, Standing Secretary-General of IOC/UNESCO, a Chinese Oceanographic Delegation of Five headed by the Director-General, Second Institute of Oceanography, SOA, Mr. Zhang Haisheng attended AST 8 held in Paris, France in March 7 – 9, 2007.  The meeting was hosted by IOC/UNESCO and 38 scientists and government observers from eleven countries of US, Canada, France, UK, Australia, Japan, Germany, India, South Korea, Swissland and China attended the Meeting.  The members of the Chinese delegation are Mr. Peng Yiqi, the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Basic Research, MOST, Dr. Zhou Zhigang, Department of Science and Technology, SOA, and Prof. Xu Jianping and Mr. Zhu Yongling from the Second Institute of Oceanography, SOA.

•January 25, 2007

On January 25, 2007, at the invitation of Prof. Xu Jianping, Dr Xie Jiping from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences visited the State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics and China Argo Real-time Data Center and gave a lecture in the title of Using Argo Data to Calculate the Current and the Analysis of the Differences.  Using Karman wave filtration method Dr. Xie made a reasonable extrapolation for the positioning of the float and gave out trajectory prediction mode and good estimates of the current velocity of the surface layer and mid layer.  His work is of great importance for the study of distribution and variation of global ocean circulation in surface and mid layers.

•January 2007

In January 2007, 《The Experiment of China Argo Ocean Observing Array》written by Prof. Xu Janping and Mr. Liu Zenghong was published by Meteorology Press in China. The book summarized part of the results of the construction of China Argo ocean observing array after its participating into the International Argo Program.
