  •       The 24th North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) annual meeting was held in Qingdao, China during October 14-25, 2015. The meeting with a theme of “Change and Sustainability of the North Pacific”, was sponsored by the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) and the PICES Secretariat, and hosted by the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) , SOA. Mr. Wang Hong, the director of SOA, gave a welcome speech at the opening ceremony. He expressed welcome reception for all the participants. He said PICES has promoted the exchange and cooperation among marine ecology, climate changes, environment protection and ocean prediction of the North Pacific, which brings together a large number of top oceanographers from the world. It's one of the most important local scientific organizations even in the global. He believed that PICES will play a more important role in future ocean innovation and development. Ms. Laura Richards, the chairman of PICES, presided the opening ceremony. She said the overall goal of PICES is to establish a collaborative relationship and promote ocean scientific researches around the North Pacific by promoting and coordinating ocean scientific researches. The meeting included 21 sessions within 5 days. More than 500 registered participants attended this annual meeting. She hoped all the participants strengthen communication and cooperation with each other through discussions and make their contributions to prosperity and developing of the North Pacific.

Invited by PICES, Mr. Liu Zenghong attended the meeting as international Argo observer authorized by international Argo project office. He gave invited lectures entitled "Progress of global Argo" and "Progress of global Argo and float technology" at the three sessions (MONITOR、POC and IPCC AR5), and also exhibited the important achievements from the beginning of international Argo project through a poster. His lectures attracted much attention from the participants. During the meeting, some participants asked about the extension of Argo to deep sea, biogeochemical and the problem on Argo floats deployed in marginal seas drifting into EEZ of a country. Mr. Liu Zenghong answered their questions based on his knowledge of the Argo. He fulfilled the task of "letting more scientists know and familiar with the Argo program, and attracting them to joining" that Howard Freeland (director of Argo office) requested.

Its member state includes Canada, People's Republic of China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, and USA. PICES devotes to promote and coordinate marine research activities in the North Pacific ocean, enhance a harmonious development of the regional ocean scientific research, and collaborative relationships among the member states. Its research activity covers marine ecology, chemistry, physical oceanography, marine environment quality, climate change and fishery industry et al. It has an important position and influence in regional and global ocean sciences.
