The review article - Fifteen years of ocean observations with the global Argo
On 27 January 2016, a review of "Fifteen years of ocean observations with the global Argo array" was online published by《Nature Climate Change》, which was co-authored by 27 scientists from 18 different countries. This paper reviewed the outstanding progress achieved during the 15 years of international Argo program, as well as a future prospect of Argo observing and its data application. Prof. Xu Jianping from State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics, the Second Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration, who is one of the Argo steering team members as well as the chief scientist of China Argo, is included in those co-authors.
Fifteen years from the beginning of Argo, scientists from various states have built a global ocean observing network consisted of 3000 Argo profiling floats, with which water temperature and salinity profiles (0-2000 meters) in global none ice-covered oceans are collected and provided to scientists from different countries. The policy of unlimited data sharing has motivated scientists to explore the internal status of the oceans, to understand how oceans impact global climate, to develop ocean model, as well as to increase accuracy in weather, climate or ocean forecasting. It is also expected to achieve a batch of revolutionary results in various fields of basic research and operational application (e.g., oceanic, atmospheric, fishery and transportation industry).
Currently with the continuous improvement of float technology, the Argo is expanding from global none ice-covered waters to seasonal ice-covered high latitudes, deep ocean, marginal seas and western boundary currents, as well as biogeochemical parameters. Its final target is to maintain a truly global-covered observing network consisted of 4000 profiling floats at least, which will sample much deeper and cover a wider range both in spatial and temporal scales.
The publication of this paper on《Nature》attracted considerable attention from Chinese medias related to science and technology, education, oceanography and meteorology. Both《CHINA SCIENCE DAILY》and《CHINA OCEAN NEWS》reported this article in their highlighted place (see appendix 1), and gave highly appraisals to the achievement of international Argo program, in particular its policy of unlimited data sharing, which leads to a positive effect on basic research and operational application related to ocean and atmosphere, as well as the issue of addressing global climate change. Other medias also reproduced those reports (listed in appendix 1). We believe that the publication of this paper will attract more scientists to pay attention to Argo program, and promote the application of Argo data in a wider field. It is also expected that the concerns and supports from Argo member states and other coastal states will be enhanced, in particular an increase in financial vestment, so that a truly global-covered Argo array will be completed as soon as possible, and be maintained for 10-20 years, and even for a longer period, which will make it possible for us to look insight into ocean, address global climate change, and resist natural disaster as well.
